How to choose and install your security camera (CCTV) system

It is very important to research the various types of security camera systems (CCTV) that will suit your needs. There are basically 3 types of CCTV systems that are popularly been used to monitor homes, offices and other properties in both commercial and residential. They are as follows:

1. DVR- Digital video recorder

These are analog cameras that use coaxial cables which connect directly to the central recorder and an additional power cable (Siamese) to power each camera.

2. NVR- Network video recorder

These are IP cameras and are more popular with more advanced features using the latest technology. They use a single cable (Cat 5 or Cat 6) to power and record videos.

3. Wireless camera

These are also IP cameras that use a power cable and also have advanced features and are easy to install.

*An IP camera or an Internet Protocol camera is a type of digital video camera that is commonly used for surveillance but unlike analogue closed-circuit television cameras, they require no local recording device, only a local area network.

Let’s look at the Pros and Cons of each CCTV type

Of course, with every type of product, you will find both pros and cons you can now be able to assess which type would be best for you. Below will give an insight into the pros and cons of each security camera (CCTV) type.

Materials and devices needed to set up your CCTV

When setting up your CCTV system, apart from the basic camera components (Cameras, NVR/DVR, Hard Drive, TV etc.) there are a few optional materials that you may need to consider because of the benefits it may offer.

  • Backup USP– This is an important piece of equipment that is highly recommended since it decreases your security risks in case of a power outage. Once the power goes off, your camera along with the NVR/ DVR will still keep recording.
  • Router– It is important to install a router to your CCTV system since this will allow online remote access. It also helps to assign IP addresses to cameras that are connected to your DVR and reduce the risks of IP conflicts and jamming.
  • Security closet for NVR/DVR– Securing your storage devices (DVR/NVR) should also be a priority considering the fact that in the case of a burglar attempt, they would want to destroy evidence. So you need to ensure that this device is installed within a network cabinet and placed in a safe and secure area that is not easily accessed by others.
  • Cloud storage– Your recorder has a limited storage limit while cloud storage offers way more storage based on your preference. In the case of fire or theft and your recorder is lost or damaged, you can still access your videos online. You can also access your video online anytime, anywhere rather than at the physical location of the recorder.
  • Surge protector– Due to unstable power, many devices and equipment are damaged causing massive loss of data etc. It is advised to have your devices connected to a surge protector and reducing the risk of damage.
